Restoration by Anthony Hicks
Rendered Panel Repairs

Exposed timber-frame and rendered panels are synonymous with historic timber-framed buildings. Although a great number of previously panelled frames have become covered by tile hanging or weatherboard, an equally great number survive as exposed framing and rendered panels.

Unfortunately, during the 20th century, a large proportion of rendered panels were replaced with hard sand and cement render causing untold damage to the structural frame by trapping moisture and accelerating timber decay. By contrast a poorly maintained or damaged traditional panel will not effectively 'wick away' any water resting on the frames horizontal surfaces which will also lead to timber decay if the panel is not repaired.

Rendered panels may include a modern build up of insulation, blended with traditional materials or a traditional method such as a riven lath and lime render finish.

By using correct methods and traditional materials your panels will last and if looked after will only require minor attention to maintain their effectiveness and appearance. This can easily be achieved by craftsmen experienced in the careful restoration of historic buildings and is a service offered by Anthony Hicks.
