Exposed timber-frame and rendered panels are synonymous with historic timber oak framed buildings. Although a great number of previously panelled frames have become covered by tile hanging or weatherboard, an equally great number survive as exposed framing and rendered panels.
Unfortunately, during the 20th century, a large proportion of rendered panels were replaced with hard sand and cement render causing untold damage to the structural frame by trapping moisture and accelerating timber decay. By contrast a poorly maintained or damaged traditional panel will not effectively 'wick away' any water resting on the frames horizontal surfaces which will also lead to timber decay if the panel is not repaired.
